What is Mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary and informal process whereby a third party (the Mediator) helps participants to try to resolve their differences so that they can continue and find a better way of working together.

How does it work?

Mediation offers a safe, confidential space for participants to have what can sometimes be a difficult conversation.

  • The Mediator is bound by a Code of Ethics
  • S/he plays an essential neutral and impartial role in the process
  • S/he explores the needs and concerns of the participants
  • S/he helps the participants to find a solution to their difficulties, where possible to find a mutually acceptable solution.

What are the steps?

  • The Mediator has one-to-one meetings with each of the participants to learn about how they see the situation and to gain their committment and trust
  • When they agree to participate the mediator then holds a joint session or sessions with the participants
  • In joint session the mediator facilitates a conversation between the particpants to clarify their needs and concerns before going on to identify options for resolution
  • In many cases agreement is reached and Mediation has an excellent success rate.
